Jason is correct. The emphasis on this project will be more on mods rather than painting. I am trying to be a frugal has possible in my design and selection of parts however, bad parts make bad mods and there are some things I will not compromise on.

The gun barrel is a cool idea but it may be a bit over the top for this project.

^thats actually not a bad idea

And this is also over the top, but what about incorporating to old glass front of a cockpit from a plane from that time period into the top of the case?

This is one hell of an amazing case, and having seen the case in person, and heard Stu talk about it, I am jealous of whoever gets the final product. He has some great ideas, and will come up with even more as the final parts fall into place.

i like the idea with the plane windows but man everyone wants the price to be low and i thing that the windows from the actual plane would be pretty expensive

Default Panel Design Update

The cuts are complete and the panels we be powder coated in the next step. All the parts have finally been assembled for the finished panel design.

The windows will be backed with modder's mesh. I selected mesh with round holes to match the round holes on the front and rear faces of the chassis. This will give the design the continuity I am looking for. The mesh will be finished in the same style as the main part of the chassis so that the panels are tied in neatly with the overall design.

The acrylic panels will be mounted on the outside of the case panels and have been cut to fit the entire area. I will be flame polishing the edges so I have a nice glassy finish and mounting them with some hex cap head machine screws, on in each corner. The panels are clear polycarbonate 1/4" thick. The thickness of the panels will add weight to the case but will also create a great deal of depth and add even more luster to the panels.

I will also be adding some new features to top of the case before applying the finish. I purchased a couple of recessed case handles. I like these handles because of their military ammo box appearance and they are also very strong and practical. I will also be adding a 120mm blowhole fan and found this old copper ring that I will be using to trim the hole. The ring flares upward and I may be adding some light features into the gap created between the top of the chassis and the inside edge of the ring.

There is still much undecided but I tend to make the final decisions on my design as the elements begin to materialize.

Great work so far. It will be interesting to see how the ring works. It doesn't look like copper? The polycarbonate goes behind the mesh? You are using mesh for both sides of the case? (will there be windows on both sides?)

It is copper but it's very old and has oxidized. I came off an antique light fixture.

The mesh goes on the back side of the panel and the poly goes on the front side of the panel and yes, there will be a window on both sides of the case.

The panels were cut with a waterjet. I created the logo design in PhotoShop and it was converted to CAD.

Yes, they are exactly the same handles I use on the BooomBox.

Sweet work as always, Stu. The logo is great...it combines the elements that you're looking for without being obnoxious or over-the-top. It really shows off your thought to design. Nice. Looking forward to the rest!

but still mad props to a good-looking case.

Nice work so far Stu, the logo came out great! I also like your choice of mesh; it fits the project very well. I believe your going for a worn with new add-ons kind of look, have you figured out lighting yet? Specifically color. Purple or blue lighting might fit the case decently; maybe with a well placed red accent.

So the case panel will be sandwiched inbetween? Will you be able to do any back lighting of the acrylic like this, or were you not planning on do so?

By the way, love the blow hole ring.

I am still working on my plans for the lighting. I proabably won't committ on the lights until the finish is complete. The finish is very experimental so I want to make sure that the lights I select compliment the finish.

I am not planning to backlight anything on this project.

Stu, the case is looking awesome. I really like the look, I think the old mixed with the new is a great idea. I can't wait to see this baby when it's finished
