Default Gateway Upgrade

My mom's old Gateway from 1998 should have been out of commission in 2000. But it has been serving for 8 years now. Far past it it's prime. But I'll give it one final upgrade. It's not much, but it will be more then 2x times it's power once the upgrade is done. Let the fun begin, first off, here's the original specs

Intel Celeron Slot 1 CPU @ 333MHz
64MB PC100 RAM
4GB Quantum HDD
Rage Pro Turbo IGP
Intel Motherboard
4x CDROM Drive

New Specs
Intel Celeron S370 @ 600MHz
256MB PC100 RAM
10GB Seagate HDD
Radeon 7000 PCI Video Card
Intel Motherboard
36x CDROM Drive

Started taking everything apart.

The "new" mother, RAM, CPU

The old stuff, little bit dusty.

After 8 years this is what a PSU will look like...

Motherboard, CPU, and RAM out of the case.

Power switch and power LED wired up for the new motherboard. (yay for $1 wire stripper)

Fan grill used to hold up the fan. Even though it's not a powerhouse going in there I don't trust it with only the PSU fan and HS/F.

Sick stuff, got rid of most of it with canned air stuff, then I ran out. >_<

Didn't feel like cleaning that old fan, so instead I used the fan that was hacked up for my Xbox case. (original case that is)

Everything assembled and about ready to boot.

Pc Heresy?

Several hours later after countless installations failed and alot of trial and error with drives, cables, disks.

Once the grimone said that he had the EXACT same problem I took out the RAM and put one of my sticks in and had XP installed in about 45 minutes. PC all hooked up and running in an hour. yay!

Well there was my Friday night. >_<

....and yes I like to take pictures, if you can't tell, haha.

Why, don't you put a better cpu like a 1ghz p3 instead of that 600mhz one, you can find them for free or on ebay. But nice upgrade anyway

Ship me one for free and I will. ;) I got it for $5 with the RAM, it was going to be destroyed.

Thanks, the main purpose of this upgrade was to be able to run XP and Office 2003.

Yeah, it was disgusting, but I cleaned it out pretty good. I'm not sure how much longer it would survive with all the gunk in it.

It's a nice little case. It has lots of modding potential.

Haha, true. But I think spending SEVERAL HOURS figuring out what the hell was wrong and getting it running is good gift in itself, haha.

But I also have other priorities when it comes to modding. Like my xbox. I need to get that going. =/

Psh, Radeon 7000 in the beast now.

I would but, both of mine are currently in use and folding. I got mine for free by ripping apart some broken compaq deskpros.

i would have given up on it as soon as i saw the dust in that psu, lol. Its good that you took the time to give life to the relic. My mom had a 200 mhz laptop and i sent that throught the air and built her a new desktop.

Dude, this is too funny...and that PSU, holy crap man! I can't believe that it actually still ran -- seems like it should have burned up. I guess that's a good indicator that Gateway actually put decent PSUs in their PCs at the time.

Upgrading to a Celeron...that makes me laugh.

+rep for joo...I need laughter today. I told my boss I was quitting yesterday and now everyone is so damn serious. LOL

That board supports an ISA device?! O_o
WTF GG D00D! Put a modem/sound card in there and feel the difference!
Lol Celeron...

One thing bothering me. Why are you using PC100 ram? Use PC133. THEN put Windows Server 2003 Enterprise on that box. O_O

Haha, yeah. Celeron ftw! I cannot believed it lived all these years now. It's amazing.

Send me some pc133 RAM and I will. It's hard coming across old cheap RAM. If you try to buy it new, it costs like $40. Hells no!
