Default HIS 4850 fan issue

Now this is something that didn't bother me a few weeks ago when I got my 4850 from newegg *HIS brand* since I thought it was correct but now my bro has the same exact one and now I see an issue.

The problem I am talking about is the fan, I've got the latest ATI CCC and drivers which allows me to adjust the fan speed through the control panel. Problem is at 100 percent you can't even feel air coming out the back, where as on my brothers same exact card you can feel it and hear it. The fan does change speed when you mess with the slider but just barely.

I even tried using Rivatuner and using the old fashioned XML files, still with no luck.

Is it possible the fan itself is defective so it's only working at half the speed it should? Would this be worth doing an RMA for? Suggestions?

it does sound like the fan might be bad. Plus, seeing as you have another working example right there for you to check it against, I'd say your best bet would be to RMA it. Even though having to do so sucks royally.

I've always run HIS because they have better coolers as a rule of thumb (evidently not the case here). I've had nothing but good luck with them; try to RMA it.

if you run those just becuase of the coolers, you should check out the one i got. the MSI Quad heatpipe. thing runs wicked cool compared to any of the others out there.

And cyclonite is right. would be a good idea to double check it. see? this is why i use the forums, cuz i always forget the simple crap.

To add to the problems I just noticed the card is WAY underclocked. It's running at 500mhz instead of 650 and when I try to change it, it reverts instantly to 500. Could this be a BIOS issue?

*** Seems the card changes clock based on GPU use. Still haven't found out about the fan yet *and my bro doesn't want to take the time to swap cards, I don't have a heat issue though**

How long could it possibly take? Just do it when he's not there or give him five bucks or something. It would help you determine if the card is in fact faulty.

Just confirmed the fan works at 100 percent in another computer, now to find out why the hell it ain't working right in this one. I know I tried to use rivatuner latest on it with no success, but I defaulted the settings and uninstalled it. Hmm

Doubtful, my PSU is much bigger than the other one in the computer I put it in (300W in theirs, 520W in mine). One notable difference with my computer is the primary OS is on M:\ drive and not C:\ drive, everything is installed on M:\ drive. Is the ATI stuff so pathetic that it only uses C:\ drive to look for these things? I mean I change the settings in CCC and the profiles.xml file auto gets changed .

Right now I have no idea WTF is causing this. I un-installed the drivers, used driver cleaner and then re-installed with no hope, even re-did riva tuner and checked all the settings just in case.

***
Just ruled out software, installed a complete new version of XP on another drive and it still wouldn't work right. Which leads me to believe either it doesn't work when the OS is on a drive letter other than C or it's going to be hardware related to my build.

For ****s'n'giggles, here are my specs if anyone has heard of this before:

Mobo: Gigabyte X48 DS4
CPU: Intel E8400
4GB's of DDR2 OCZ performance RAM
****load of HDD's, primary OS on M:\ drive, tried to use D:\ drive for separate install with no luck.

Finally an OCZ 520W PSU which from what I've been told is plenty for my setup and the fact it runs all my games no problem is testament to that (on ultra settings in Far Cry 2 & Stalker Oblivion Lost).

Later tonight I'm going to try and recover all my files from my original OS on C:\ then reformat, check to see if this is the case. If so I will be thoroughly pissed.
