Thats awesome dark. I knew you would love it. Alot of people think vintage audio is a waste of money. I think, in some cases, its the only way to go. A solid well built, AFFORDABLE, alternative to cheaply manufactured modern equipment in the same price range.
That was a very nice score for $50.
That "fuzzy"ness that he referred to might just be some dirt or oxidization in the RCA "in" ports that he used (ie tape, phono, auxiliary), Or the speaker jacks.
Find out what ports he ran his sources threw typically. It might be you are just using a different port then he did, and thats why you are not having the "fuzzy" issue.
Another known issue with the old Marrantz units that causes fuzzy or scratchy sound threw one or both channels is they used silver solder (witch oxidizes easily) in the speaker relay switch's.
Just some thoughts. Enjoy!!

I found out this originally retailed at $550, in the early 70's when it was being produced, which in CPI-adjusted 2008 dollars equates to about $2164.

I can't even begin to describe the high quality of this unit. AAL2230's are meant to be loud, between the pair, I've got 4 12" drivers. This thing runs them at low volume with all the precision I get at normal listening volume. It doesn't drop ANY sound at all. Changing volume is so ridiculously smooth - I don't notice the VERY audible drops of certain frequencies that I got with my previous amp - because there AREN'T any drops.

This thing is an absolute work of art. You could spend several thousand dollars on an amp and probably not get the kind of quality and workmanship I'm seeing on this. I'm not turning knobs and worry about whether or not they will break or snap off.

The only thing I wish it had was the optional wood case that you could buy for these - they look very handsome sitting inside them. But not to say anything bad about it, it still looks like a work of art.

I don't think I could be more pleased with it ^_^. I wouldn't have thought something that does such a simple job as amplification could make such a gargantuan difference in audio quality.

Tvangeste, feel free to drop in and see me, I'm in room 414.
