Default RAM Question

Morning all,

Just curious on which is better more RAM or faster RAM? Is it better to have 12 gig of a slower or 4 gig of a faster?

Thanks,
Drac

12 gigs of slow vs 4 gigs of fast is a silly comparison. 99.99% of computer users couldn't use 4 gigs of ram if they tried.

With today's awesome technology, you only need to worry about capacity. Speed provides pretty much zero gain after a certain point.

So 4 gigs of a decent RAM so pretty much cover it? I've been out of the loop for what high performance PC specs are. When looking at the motherboards last night over at Fry's some of the biggest differences the sales man was going on about where the differences in the memory speed and how much the board could handle.

Let me know how far behind the power curve I had fallen.

Thanks,
Drac

I have little regard for the "official" clock speeds that motherboards claim to support (i'm not talking about the memory type BTW). You can usually go above or below the stated speeds by over/underclocking. Anyway, what setup are you looking at? With certain platforms (say the i7, there are reasons to go 6 GB vs. 4 GB). Generally, i would say that 4 GB is enough for most users depending on what you do. I have a friend that needs around 16 GB because he maxed out his 8 GB

Thanks both of you.

This started out to be a HTPC but it is going to serve a second function of gaming on the 42 tv so I am looking on how much I have to up the system from the one Joe recommended in an earlier thread.

My gaming is not going to be the hottest highest level of the newest game, Diablo II and hopefully III when it comes out.

Your display does not depend on the PC itself. It really doesnt depend on the vid card either. The resolution you want to run the display at determines what vid card you need, and then if its too much of a drain, then you may need to up your system because of the vid card. Usually a better PSU will compensate for this, processors dont really care what display you use, they work whether you have one plugged in or not.

A 64MB vid card can run a 42" TV signal the same as a 1G card, only the eye candy makes a diff. Would i recommend using a 64mb card? No.

Get my point?

I think so. Plan the system around the vid card?

The system that Joe recommended will run the tv well enough. I was thinking about now that I was adding gaming to that it would need more resources for the game not the display?

Not sure what system that is, but you can get 4 gigs of Corsair DHX RAM for $45 + shipping at the 'Egg. Thats what i use, and its more than enough for what you want to use it for.
