| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? My internet is working properly but I'm getting that server execution failed message when I put my mouse over the X
I tried but after the “System Tools” part I don’t see “Local Users and Groups” I just see this:
Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, Shared Folders, Reliability and Performance, Device Manger
I assumed it would be “Shared Folders” so I clicked &got this:
Shares, Sessions, Open Files
I clicked on “Shares” then got these:
ADMIN$, C$, D$, D$, IPC$
So I tried clicking on “ADMIN$” because I thought it could have been short for “Administrator” but it doesn't do anything, please help! |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Hi
came to say thanks and to give my experience on it.
not using AIM; I have MSN and skype though but I have no way to tell exactly the problem appeared after their installation. I connect this machine using remote. It worked fine.
then I got the red cross and network/sharing center that would freeze up every time I tried to access to it. I also couldn't get the remote to work.
Used the CMD command line and it fixed the red cross thing and windows network/sharung center worked again.
But still I cannot access through remote. I double checked everything (windows firewall, sonicwall, rules, IPs, port number...) I just can't get it to work. When I try to connect to it, I am getting an 'immediate' error message: http://stephen.mounioloux.free.fr/remote-error.png
I am convinced the cause was this bug. Any good/bad luck with RDP? |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? The issue is related to the October patches for Vista AND instant messager programs (AIM) AND disabled user account control (UAC).
The best solution I have used is system restore, thereby preventing the problem from occuring, rather than applying and reapplying a fix that does not prevent future problems . The current official Microsoft solution is to reinstall all security policies and then restore permissions, which is overly complex and not designed for Vista Home or OEM versions. This is basicly a trivial solution anyone could do, with simple steps how to avoid the problem completely.
1. Required: System Restore to a date before the red x appeared. Typically start at October 31 and then work backwards untill the red x is gone from your network icon.
2. Recommended: Open the Security Panel and turn ON User Account Control. If you stop now, you can safely wait for Microsoft to make a fix.
3. Optional: Reinstall AIM (and/or any other programs removed by the restore). After installation, you may turn off UAC at your own risk. Do not allow AIM to update while UAC is OFF.
4. If any problems return, go back to step 1. You less likely to have future problems if you leave UAC ON
Note: Simply uninstalling AIM will not fix the server execution, you must restore to a point before AIM was installed to repair all broken permissions. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? The cmd line fix worked for my Vista Home Premium edition. I also had been accepting the updates from M$ last month and ran a first install of AIM. So, it appears we all have this in common. I leave the UAC off because it is so damn annoying popping up all the time. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Hi All,
This seems to be a partial fix (i.e. it doesn't quite fix everything that goes wrong). There can be other ramifications that you don't see if you don't use certain features.
The Network and Sharing center is working just fine now on my machine. However, I cannot enable media sharing to my Xbox 360. This problem occurred at the same time the thread topic problem started.
Basically the media sharing service starts and immediately stops.
I'm hoping SP1 will deal with these issues properly. |

Simply run a command prompt as an administrator (right-click on it and click "Open as Administrator") then enter the following command line:
net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Local Service" /add
That should do it. We should thank God for the each other because Microsoft sure has no F-ing idea what they are doing yet.

P.S.- please distribute this to other groups... | I just wanted to say thanks...I had this issue and one more (code 10 error in device manager under portable devices) and this fix...fixed both of them!! Thanks again.. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Hi All,
This is the first forum I have bothered to sign up for. I have Vista Home Premium, and was having the "server execution failure" problem. Thanks to docinventor the problem is now gone!!! In the future I will try looking on this site for help when I have other issues, but as of right now I signed up just so I could take the time to give credit where due. Thanks again DOCINVENTOR |
