The default Vista is definitely a pain in the ass though. I need to publish a new policy and rebuild Vista once I get ahold of the retail binaries. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Hi Everyone.
I just got done installing the October 2007 Windows patches and this issue happened to me. I can confirm the fix of adding the "Local Service" account to the local administrators group does resolve this problem.
I called Microsoft Premiere and they had no idea what the problem was, so if you are an IT guy looking for a fix, just do what is listed here.

- Todd9774 | Todd,
I think that has been one of the most frustrating aspects of Vista (and Vita software application writers) is their absolute ignorance of problems plaster all over the WEB.
You can call M$ or M$ approved software Manufacturer and you will get the following; check with the other guy, never heard of that one and/or both.
All I have to say is Vista Service Pack #1 better be able to make "Silk purse out of sow's ear" or they are going to look pretty damn stupid. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? HolmanGT - I agree. I also like how Vista will spike your CPU to 100% for no apparent reason too. There are several USB hotfixes available that fix USB issues in Vista as well, so keep that in mind. There's always issues in new Windows versions, kind of like buying a new car from a new product line.
I am going to be talking to Microsoft Premier again tomorrow so if I hear anything, I'll let you all know.

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Docinventor, thank you so much for your instructions on how to fix this problem. This has been bugging me for days. Since I didn't change my networking settings I suspect some Vista update introduced the bug.
A quick heads-up for international users: Apparently, Microsoft localizes their command-line options. This makes for some interesting detective work trying to figure out the correct optiions. For example, for German, the correct command is:
net localgroup "Administratoren" "NT-Autorität\Lokaler Dienst" /add
Thanks again |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? I too want to thank all of those who figured out this fix. I've been running Vista Ultimate on my home-built computer since last February. After my initial BSOD issues all had settled down and I have been happy and then this happened today. I guess we're lucky we still had a connection from which to search!! I would like to know if this is a bug or was that entry supposed to be in place already? Is some software responsible for removing what was there or does this fix somehow mask a bug that's in Vista. I did do an update today to AIM 6.5.5.2. But I had also done a BIOS update to my Intel D975XBX2 and also added the new Sigmatel (IDT) Audio driver. So I am not really sure when this all went south. I just happened to have noticed that little red "X" and thought , "What the heck is that?" Hope someone can give me a clue as to what caused it and can it happen again as it seems it have happened to some of you more than once. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? I had the same problem, I'm pretty sure it is caused from AIM. I originally had this problem after I installed an update from AIM recently. I ran the fix that was listed here and all appeared normal. HOWEVER, the fix doesn't seem to fix the fact that Remote Desktop is broken. I have remote desktop enabled and it doesn't show up on netstat-a as listening on port 3389. So, I did a system restore back about 4 days ago, reinstalled aim and the SAME problem. So now I'm just not going to reinstall AIM 6.5. I'll find an older version for now.
Update, found what appears to be a more thorough fix. http://messageboards.aol.com/aol/en_...Id=2795&func=6

No offense - but is it possible you misapplied the fix. You are the first one I have heard say it didn't work for them. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? I applied the patch both ways - via the GUI, and when that didn't work, I removed the rights for LOCAL SERVICE and then did them via the command line. In each case I was able to verify via the GUI that the Administrators group had NT AUTHORITY/LOCAL SERVICE as a member.
But running a full PC Backup stll generates the same Server Execution Failed message. with an error code of 80080005.
By the way, this didn't use to happen. I don't know if Windows patches account for the problem. Is it possible that installation of Sun's JDK could cause this?
Any other ideas? |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Jon,
You haven't mentioned if you have the red X in the system stray attached to the network icon?
Also are you using Vista to do the full backup. I personally have never used that and don't know how well it works. I have always used Acronis for that task with no problems what soever.
As far as what started this probable, I have heard people claim everything from an up date to installing AIM. I don't think anyone really knows the cause.
And without M$ assistance we may never know the cause, but myself, I can live with a workaround.
I keep asking about the "Red X" because I am concerned that your problem may sound like the one in this thread and be related but not exactly the same problem i.e. that is why the fix is not working for you. Most of the folks that have this particular problem have the sever error from the moment they boot up, they don't have to run any specific program after boot to see the problem. |

| Re: Vista giving you a Server Execution Failed? Hi everyone. I have had this issue resolved for about 2 weeks now, but I have been too busy to post. I have Vista Ultimate on my laptop, and I had the red X over the network icon, and the "Server Excecution Failed" message. It appeared that all automatic services running off of the "Local Service" account were not starting at boot. The fix, from Microsoft, is below. 1. Back up the registry. 2.Download and install SubinACL from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en 3.As an administrator, run the following commands from a command prompt (switch to the install directory for SubinACL first. Default is "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\" for 32-bit, and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\" for 64 bit):
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
The first two commands can take considerable time to complete, however each command can be run in a separate window to save time.
3. After completing all four of the above commands you have to reapply the default security template by running the following command:
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose 4. Reboot. It appears, at least for me, that several permissions were reset in the registry. I am a very advanced user, but to be honest, I am not sure how this happened. All I know is I am fixed, and that the issue happened after reboot of the October Microsoft patches. Also, be aware, that all of your permissions on the registry are going to be adjusted. Hope this helps. - T. |

I downloaded the SubinACL but noticed it does not say it is for Vista. I am not going to kill something else by installing it am I? I just don't want to go from bad to worse. ;) |

Todd,
Being the patient soul that I am I went ahead and used the link you posted. And all worked fine. But I will say the way SubinACL post while running scarred hell out of me. The red bar and the executed and failed at first glance looks like everything it failing. I reexamined what it was saying and everything is ok.
The last part where you reapply the security policies it did say there were some errors but just ignore them, unusual way for a utility to post at completion.
Anywho all is well that ends well, Thank you Mr. Todd. |

Server Execution Error (vista home premium on my notebook that I lend out to my kids and of course to their roomies). Probably a combination of an AIM install and the Oct 2007 updates. Also, I thought I might have screwed up a home network printer addtion. It’s funny both fixes required cmd line fixes. Good thing that “doskey” is sort of built in. “
Uhmmm....Microsoft knows what they're doing. You're just not able to keep up with them. “
that is kinda of scary, that MS knows what they are doing and do it anyway.
Thank you again
