Default Vertical line on LCD

My LCD I've been using for about 4 years has recently been showing a line that goes down the left side of my LCD. When the problem first started appearing, if I tapped the back of the monitor gently, it went away. Now all it will do is change colors between white/green/light blue. I'm no expert on monitors, so I was wondering if anyone has any hints. My moms ancient IBM laptop actually does the same thing since she got it from work a year ago. It can usually be temporarily fixed by gently pinching the top of the plastic casing just above the line.

I've seen this happen. It could be the cable coming loose inside and you just need to open it and jiggle the cables. Or worse it could be the controller overheated and now has issues drawing that column of pixels properly. Your monitor could be very well bad for life. I'm sorry I don't know if it's a panel or a controller issue. If hitting it makes it work I'm guessing it's a panel issue.

The red data in that column is bad. You've only got full on or full off for red but nothing in between. You get greens and blues, but then also white. If there was no red whatsoever it would be cyan instead of white.
