Default Hardware or Software problem??

Four days ago my new computer (6715B lap top ) did not recognize when the power cord wa plugged in and continued to run on battery. A thorough examination of the cord and outlet showed it to be in working condition. After messing around with it i found that if i shut the computer down and remove th battery...wait a few minutes and reconnect everything it would work. Anycase it has continued to happen. I am not convinced it is a hardware problem but am looking for advise.

Yesterday when turning on the computer i get a black screen with the following warning:

SMAR FAILURE PREDICTED ON HARD DISK 2 ST9120821AS-(S1)

WARNING: IMMEDIATLY BACK-UP YOUR DATE AND REPLACE YOUR HARD DRIVE A FAILURE MAY BE IMMINENT.

KEY F1 TO CONTINUE START UP.

I thinking it all may be one in the ame problem. It has continued with the same warning on start up but so far my computer is still running. I have started to back everything up.

Anyone have similiar experience or know what this problem is. before i sink $300 into fixing this I'd like to know how serious it is.

Thank you

Lightbulb Re: Hardware or Software problem??

Hi,

I think it has some battery problem or a virus in your lap top. Check both of these reasons and scan it by anti virus or totally format the hard disk and make partiton again.

Thanx !!!!

when you get a SMART error on your HD, you want to replace it.

Download ultimatebootcd and run GWSCAN.

does the pc have charging lights on the unit? if so, boot up in to bios and try the plug/unplug the battery and watch the lights.

That's a Seagate hard drive which carries a 5 year warranty. You might be able to get an RMA and they'll send you a new one. I'd try contacting HP too and finding out about warranties. See what can be done for free. Unfortunately I predict that they'll cling to your SMART message and keep parroting it back to you whether it is the real issue or not.

Speedfan is a program I know of that can tell you your drive's SMART data. It will show you in .html format. Save the page and post it here as an attachment or paste the data and numbers it displays. Maybe we can see why it thinks the drive might fail.

For power, your jack might be loose. I can't be certain to why the battery might prevent it from powering the system. I'm taking a guess of how this stuff operates here. But you plug in the battery and there's some contacts made but some that aren't. So you plug in the wall adapter and the battery is doing something that makes the wall power not get through the circuitry.
