Default 7200 or 5400

Is there a performance hit when using it in a server for storage? Or would it be more suited for internal network storage?

I personaly use a Seagate 1tb 5400rpm for a storage drive and i don't notice a big diffrence between the 5400rpm and my main Seagate 500gb 7200rpm when it comes to normal storage use. Even when i benched them they were not that far off in speeds.

Newegg has Hitachi 250s on sale for $45 shipped. Thought putting a couple in RAID for the web side might be nice.

afik max transfer speed and seek latency is affected, ya. for just some server storage that gets stuff dumped and read off of occasionally, it shouldnt matter much...

if it were me i would probably just pay the few more bucks for the faster drive.

I really depends on what you will be using the storage for. If its a media box that will be doing a couple streams, transcoding, or lots of random data access you want 7200 or 10K+.

If it purely just file storage, no video streams, etc then 5400 will work out. You will want to make sure that you set the drive power settings so that when the array is not being used it can power down the drives.

I have 1 array with 4 Seagate 1TB Eco drives and it works well for basic file storage. My 2 other NAS (One which I just setup tonight) have 4 1TB 7200 Raid Edition drives, as I use them for streaming HD video.

Well its for normal web/email server duty. Ill just wait a bit for the 7200s to come down a little further and bite on some 1TB's...

Maybe not for server use, but I can attest that drive speed makes a HUGELY noticeable difference in overall performance. When I threw a 10k RPM drive in my desktop as the boot/app drive, it felt like everything loaded up three times as fast.

Yep. Too bad they dont have nearly the lifetime or reliability as other drives.
