| S-ATA Raid or cheap ata drives? I am building a computer and i don't know whether to invest in Serial ATA RAID or to just buy some cheap ATA drives, perhaps with rebates. I'm looking for 160 to 250 GB, combined.
Can anyone suggest anything or help me out?
Thanks. |

| So you want storage....I recommend drives from Seagate and Maxtor. They're both awesome manufacturers and they do a great job with storage products. :) Try finding a drive with at least an 8MB cache and you won't be disappointed. :) |

When I have some serious cash I want a SATA raptor and a SATA DVD burner. One of them I hope to buy today though. I'm leaning towards the DVD burner. =/
Seagates used to be crap and loud...but the newer models(built AFTER 1999) actually have no problems!:) Sure a few of them are loud or expensive, but I'd rather have a dependable drive instead of a faulty partition every few weeks...
I have an 80 Maxtor from Staples! o_O I wanted Seagate, but it appears that either one will do. If you're getting a 7200RPM drive, you better stick to EIDE. SATA drives seem to be more expensive, but if you find one cheaper...Go for it! O_o |

| Browse forums, newegg, and the net. ATA drives you can get really cheap these days.
For about $100 shipped you could get 2x 80gb 8mb cache HDDs, brand new. |

| I'm runnin a 8MB 7200rpm 120gig Maxtor and a 8mb 7200rpm 80gig Seagate, and the Seagate is UBER quiet ;) It's also uber hott.
Why not a IDE-Raid, sure its not quite as speedy as a SATA-Raid, but its a hellalot cheaper and I don't think my harddrives perform all that slow anyway. I think Sata is too overrated for a little increase in speed. |

The Seagate drives had a noise flaw in the beginning. They fixed that. :) Anyway, yes...I do get concerned about heat from a Seagate. Hard drive coolers are about as needed as when I buy something from newegg...have it shipped overnight...bring it to the top of the manifest...insure it....o_O
The one thing I don't like are RAID cards. SATA seems to eliminate the purpose of those. :) |

| I would strongly suggest that you go with SATA. This will allow for newer and faster drives. ATA is just becoming too old and is the worst for RAID.
SATA and SCSI are far better for RAID, and since those will increase in speed, while ATA is stuck at 133 mbps, then go with SATA, or the more expensive SCSI. |
