| Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally Hi,
Before adding my first post I want to say that congratulations for this great forum.
Last week I came across a survey and according to that 80% of Britain, France, Germany and U.S people admit to downloading video illegally from the net. What do you think about this issue? I mean who will win governments or piracy? As you know, torrent site piratebay is a political part in Sweden and already won a seat in European Parliament Elections.

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally They say that although a lot of people pirate musc and whatnot, they're also a huge portion of the people that buy music.
Having said that, 8% isn't that bad, and maybe if studios actually started making movies worth buying, the problem wouldn't be so bad. |

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally i think its 80%, as 8 isnt that impressive enough to even make an article about and he said 80 with in the post.

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally Well the Piratebay tracker is going to go down at the end of the month (at the very latest, could be sooner) because they were conveniently bought up by a multinational company which owns hundreds if not thousands of internet cafes (some of these are massive LAN gaming 'arenas' from what I've seen), and things nebulously referred to as game factories, which to me sounds like media such as paks and discs.
They were really ready to get this acquisition from the Piratebay. They are turning it into something which sounds a lot to me like Steam, if you read the blog post on thepiratebay.net. They are getting it for the same price as the owners of TPB were sentenced to pay, which means they basically don't have to commit suicide.
I think this is probably the company who was behind all the politicking and lobbying for suing TPB in the first place. Honestly they have been vulnerable since they were taken down the first time and sprang back up in three countries, I think is was more or less a case of extortion against its owners for a super-cheap acquisition. They said themselves that it was worth a lot more money, in the same blog post. They certainly would know to keep their mouths shut after losing this many battles and so badly.
Still they are just one torrent tracker, this can not be any worse than the loss of Suprnova. That resulted in TPB, which as I mentioned survived one attack exactly like the one which destroyed Suprnova and came back stronger. In theory the next one will never go down. :-) |

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally I will give an example as why I can at least partially justify piracy:
Take the TV series Farscape. I love it. I think it's the best space operas I've ever watched, possibly the best TV show ever. Due to a bunch of bureaucratic bull****, it was canceled after four seasons, and then due to more bureaucratic bull**** over copyright issues, it only had a very short, limited-run release. You can't find a new copy anywhere. If you want to watch the show legally, you must buy a second-hand, out-of-print copy for around $600-800.
Sorry, that's not going to happen.
---
If RIAA, MPAA, and other organizations like that got their heads out of their asses and stopped assuming an outdated, impractical business model would still work in the real world, they'd have a much better chance of curbing piracy.
They will NEVER be ahead of the pirates. The only thing they accomplish now is creating new pirates when legitimate customers get pissed off at the horrible copy protection schemes they put in place.
But what they can start offering is something better. |

Drac | I didn't realize this.
However this also brings up another point of mine - while iTunes is undoubtedly an incredibly successful business venture for MANY people, I won't give money Apple. Their copy-protection schemes and business models are as bad or worse than Microsoft's ever were. If I have a TV show, I don't want it to be in Apple's proprietary format, and I want to be able to share it among ALL my computers. It's no different than me loaning the DVDs to a friend, or simply playing them in a different DVD player.
Slightly off-topic, I know, but that's my beef with Apple. I understand they have greatly laxed up their anti-piracy schemes as of late, but I won't buy anything unless there are no strings attached. The last time I bought music it was from emusic.com. Cheap songs, completely free of any copy-protection. |

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally You can move purchased stuff from one registered Itune program to another as long as they are all you log on. I buy on copy and all four computers in the house can use it. Once you move it to another computer you just tell it to check registration and your of.
I do agree with you about the propriety formats they use. Annoying as hell but there are several programs that can change the formatting, some of them even legal. Another big grief I have with Apple's Itunes is that they need to get off their butts and not just have the first season of shows. Star Treks are the worsest.
But on the good side they are one of the few places you can down load HD shows.

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally See, that's my problem. If I have to install a media program I am forced to use in order to watch TV shows I have legally purchased - that's not freedom. I should be able to use whatever media player I want.
I shouldn't need to verify that I haven't stolen something that I've bought every time I want to go watch it again.
I'm picky about things like that though. I'm glad they at least have a business model that suits most people's needs, and has helped curb piracy at least a little bit. |

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally I know exactly what you mean Darklink, but I tell you what, that is a lot better then the digital copy crap you get when you buy a DVD.
I bought the Nightmare Before Christmas (yes I like that movie, lol) and it came with a digital copy. So I thought oh cool, I can put this on my computer and transfer it to my zune if I want something to watch on the road.
Well little did I know it's one time use only and it is infested with DRM. I formatted my laptop to install Home Premium over my Home Basic. Well I went to go play it, didn't work. Awesome.
I'm okay with my music having DRM, I'm happy with my Zune subscription, I pay out the ass for my cellphone, I pay a small fee a month to listen and download music I want. It works out well because I can stream it to my 360 and I listen to my music primarily on my laptop, zune, or 360. If I need to make a CD, well there's ways to do that.
But I see it from your point to, it sucks for sure. I doubt it's going to change. |

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally You can move files from an iPod to a PC without using iTunes. And without affecting the iPod.
As for dvd ripping
DVD43 will decrypt DVD's on the fly, without having to put the data on your HD. Then use Handbreak to rip the dvd to your favorite format. It was in a Maximum PC mag last year. I have been using that since then and it works great. Both of them are free apps

| Re: Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally I thought HandBrake was only for Mac? If it's not, I'm pretty sure it used to be.
Anywho, I have about 400 GB of downloaded TV shows on my computer and my Xbox. Is all this illegal? Well, hell yeah it is, but I'm sick of paying $50 a month for cable to watch f*cking American Idol, and all that other mindless crap they have nowadays. I want to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it.
Also, like DarkLink said, some shows aren't on TV anymore, and/or they don't make the DVDs for them. For instance, I like the old ass show the Wonder Years (I know, laugh), but they don't show it on TV anymore, it can't be watched on Hulu, and you can't buy the DVDs because of music copyright issues. The one season they did release of it is going for a few hundred on eBay. |
