| As far as my PC's concerned, I no longer have a CD-ROM Well, all the cables are hooked up, but my CD-ROM is no longer in the hardware profile, nor is it listed in My Computer. I got hacked about 2 days ago, and I'm thinking the drivers got deleted by the f***stick that did it, but still....argh. Could it be anything other than the drivers? |

| it should be detected by the bios and then it should be detected by windows because of the bios. I would try to reinstall or repair windows. Reinstalling windows gets rid of the windows folder and you have to reinstall all your programs, but you dont have to restore you other filesq |

| OK, so now I've gotta find a windows disk (shop-built pc, didn't have a disk when I got it). BIOS sees it, but winblows doesn't. Damn crap. |

| Get a firewall and patch your system to make sure it doesen't happen again. An IDS (intrusion detection system) would be nice too. Notify your sysadmin or ISP (they can check the log files and/or checksum to find the crackers IP address (if he didn't clean them)).

| An IDS is a good idea, as for the firewall, I think it's part of my anti-virus program (PC-cillin). And thanks for pointing out the cracker part, I just wanted to go with the broad, socially-known term (yeah, I kinda forgot where I was posting this, one of the few places where people know the difference)...As for notifying the ISP, something tells me AOL won't be much help. |

| You can try to disable it in bios then reboot then reenable it in bios and reboot and see if it kicks windows into reconizing it. Or try replacing the cable to it, it may have gone bad at the same time you got hacked. Have you tried checking for it in hardware profiles in windows and seeing if its there. If it is then its just not mapped right and you can fix that easy. |

| First off - Don't panic, or jump to conclusions . . .
If the CD-ROM is not defective, it should show up in BIOS regardless of any tampering with your OS. Is the drive access indicator light flashing during boot-up? If so, can you open the drive tray? If not, check the IDE and power cable installation. If it has power, try switching or replacing the IDE cable. If the drive appears dead from these tests alone, you could borrow another from a friend, or "temporarily" purchase one from a store with a "liberal" return policy - you don't have to rip anything apart - just plug the cables in and see if it works.
If you have an apparently working drive that shows in BIOS, then boot into Windows and check the Device Manager if it hasn't been recognized - Click once on the "DVD/CD-ROM" category (or any category if that isn't showing), and click on the "Scan for hardware changes" button above the Menu Bar to see if it can be detected.
I have an Abit IC-7 mobo, and I currently have a DVD-RW and CD-RW, 2 SATA hard drives, and an IDE hard drive. If I add a second IDE hard drive, I "lose" the DVD burner in WinXP Pro, and nothing I do will "bring it back" until I remove the 2nd device on that secondary channel - I wasn't hacked, it's just a minor bug . . .
If you have a broadband connection, you should have a good software firewall app too, and I also think a router (with non-default password access) is a good idea and cheap insurance. |

And no I don't think that AOL will help you much. You could post at the Infowar forums to help you to protect yourself and try to find the intruders IP yourself (if you are really pissed at this guy). Tell them about what happened, they'll listen. Good luck.
