Default Large Wooden Tower

I was very fortunate to have been commissioned to build a large wooden tower case, to be used to hold a very large water cooled rig.

The case was designed to contain an EATX motherboard, seven 5.25-inch drives and eight 3.5-inch hard drives.

Two water cooling loops will be installed, with two 120.4 radiators mounted in the top chamber, expelling warm air through the perforated aluminum. Each chamber is fed with cool air from the bottom of the case via an air duct formed by the solid front panel.

Here's the list of characteristics and features of the case.
Physical Characteristics:
  • Internal dimensions (HxWxD - inches): 26 x 10 x 25
  • External dimensions (HxWxD - inches): 30 x 13 x 30
  • Weight: 47 pounds

Materials:
  • 3/4-inch solid red oak and 5.2mm red oak veneer plywood.
  • .100-inch sheet and 1/8-inch aluminum plate and angle.

Storage:
  • Modular 5-1/4-inch drive cage capable of holding seven drives, four of which are externally accessable.
  • Two removable 3-1/2-inch drive cages capable of holding four drives each. Drives are attached to the cage through soft rubber grommets.

Features:
  • The case is divided into three separate horizontal chambers, each fed and exhausted by a 120mm fan (the power supply fan is used as one of the exhaust fans). The front intake fans are fed by an air duct.
  • The 5-1/4-inch drive cage rails are removable.
  • Removable motherboard tray.
  • 2-3/8-inch twin-wheel casters.
  • A 1-1/8-inch gap between the right side panel and the removable "false" backs.
  • The power supply can be mounted in either the top or bottom chamber and in any orientation.
  • The upper chamber can hold two quad 120mm radiators.
  • Bulgin vandal resistant illuminated power switch.
  • Wood finished with black water-based stain and polyurethane.
  • Can be shipped flat or pre-assembled.
Thanks for looking!

Very clean. Nicely done.

Are you going to be putting the hardware in or is your client? Either way, we'd love to see the build out.

Its solid oak and oak veneer plywood. The 5.2mm oak plywood really helped to keep the weight of the case down.

I updated the first post with all of the case specs.

And I've also been commissioned to mount all of the water cooling hardware that would require any modifications to the case i.e. holes drilled, slots routed etc. I'll keep you all posted.

The motherboard tray and the attached back panel came from mountainmods.com.

Base price for that case is $550, although that exact case has some extra features like the bottom molding, black stain, etc. that brought the price up to over $600.

I have a decent woodshop i have been toying around in since junior high, and have thought many times about doing this.

I was always at a loss for how to actually utilize/craft mounting surfaces, drive bays, psu slot, etc.. basically the metal stuff ;)

This gives me great ideas and a lot of inspiration to return to that project some day.

Showed the thread to my buddy who's been a wood floor/trim guy for 15 years, he says the finish is pro.

Awesome work; individual, unique, and makes it look good sitting in any room with other wood.

Extremely nice work! I like that there is plenty of room behind the mobo tray to run/hide wires, extra PSU connectors, etc.

This is a really, really high quality case build...congrats and welcome to the forum!
