| Computer window venting mod. idea Hi, i'm trying to find a window vent for my computer.
Or have one made.
I can't be the first person to think of this?
I have had the idea in my mind for years, but after getting a portable AC that has something just like this I decided it was time to get one for my cpu.
I attached a quick diagram I made in paint to show the parts needed or the basic idea of what I desire.

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea This has been discussed before, and i don't remember there being anything wrong with it other than if you live in a very cold region, the parts inside the computer could start to condensate, and that wouldn't be good at all ;) |

I don't have the tools or the supplies to make something like this personally.
That said i'm sure if someone was to make something like this they could easily sell them to people with a little marketing. |

It also has a lengthy discussion on the whole 'condensation' aspect of doing something like this. But basically if the whole case is A/C'd, then you wont have any. |

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea Thanks for the reply guys, I think I wasn't clear enough.
All I want is to vent the heat that comes out of the back of my case outside. I have a sli rig with a 1200 watt psu and it kicks out some major heat. The room I am in often can get to 85+F when the rest of the house is about 73F.
So what I want is a plastic housing that fits to the back of my pc with a fan that keeps the air moving so it doesn't just collect in the housing. The hot air blown by the fan should travel up and out the exhaust hose to a sliding adjustable window mount (like my portable ac has).
Then the heat will go outside vs collecting in my room. |

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea Eh, you'll probably be better off purchasing an AC unit for your room. You can pick a small one up for $90. That will cool your room down to 50*F if you want, lol. |

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea I have a portable ac, and trust me they don't cost 90$ haha I did a lot of research. This is a 9,000 btu/h unit and while the air that comes out of it is approximately 50F it won't get the room less than approximately 70F.
But the ac unit uses a ton of electricity (my apc battery backup clicks on for a second when the thing turns on and there not even on the same wall socket), with a window vent system I would probably use the ac 1/4 as much and the fan would use almost no power.

I know itll probably be ugly, but if you mount the fan on the outside of the window, then you can attach the vent to it without even uglier adapters. Get a piece of plexi for the window side and put another fan on it, this time maybe one that runs off 120VAC and use it to mount the vent and help draw the heat from that end.
Were you thinking of putting it on the side window, or behind the PCI bracket (back end) where the vid cards exhaust?
A much nicer solution would be to water cool just the vid cards if they get that hot. You can get a decent setup even with new stuff for fairly cheap.
Rad, $50: http://www.xoxide.com/swiftech-dual-quiet-radiator.html
GPU blocks (x2) $94: http://www.xoxide.com/swiftech-mcw60...ter-block.html
Pump $73: http://www.xoxide.com/swiftech-mcp355-pump.html
While youre at it, might as well cool the CPU which would add another $50-70 depending on which one you went with. The tubing and misc stuff would probably add another $20-40 on it.
You can get cheaper prices, but due to rules, i only linked to Xoxide's stuff.

They got it for $90 on sale. http://www.amazon.com/Haier-200-BTU-...5629314&sr=8-1
I don't know how well this will work. Heat also dissipates through your computer's chassis. Not all the heat goes out through the back.
If you wanted to cool down your computer, the most plausible thing to do is water cool it.
Best of luck, maybe you'll find an inexpensive solution! |

Hmm water coolings probably not a bad idea, though I really don't even know where to begin with that, I have built a lot of computers but I have never used water cooling its a little intimidating... I remember those cartoons from when I was a kid "water and electricity don't mix" lol
But thanks for the advice guys!
Thats for a window mount AC, mine is portable its on wheels and 5200 btu's haha sadly wouldn't put a dent in the heat in the room. =)
This is my ac http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...ctId=100663245
p.s. Your car is big pimp'n! =)

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea I say if you have the money, venture into watercooling!
I haven't played with watercooling yet either. It's something I can't wait to get my hands into, once I have the funds to do so.
Oh 90 degrees isn't too bad, the 360 is known to throw out 100+ degrees from it's exhaust!
I know what it's like to sit in that heat. It's pretty miserable! |

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea I can afford the water cooling stuff, but I can't afford a new computer if I fail miserably heh.
90 is basically at idle I haven't really checked under full load. All I know is that before I got the ac, it was often 85-90+ in here, and haha yeah miserable pretty much sums it up. |

NExt question..... How often do you clean your computer?? Third question!...... Did you seat your CPU correctly? .........Because those temps are crazy man! Start at the basics man...and work your way from there!

**edit: guess thats what i get for speed reading a thread..... your psu is causing a lot of the heat problems ehh.. and after re reading some of your posts... you seem to know your way around a computer... but yeah....some of what i say still stands.... Get better case ventilation ...if possible... ;)

Same as 32ºC.
Solid advice nonetheless. |

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea Well first off, my cpu isn't 90c its 90f. And thats not the cpu even, its the exhaust coming from my 1200w power supply.
And wow man thats EXACTLY what I was thinking, even the exact same hose that scrunchy hose with the end that looks like a vaccume nozzle, only I want to vent my hose out a window.
Want to make me one? Or show me how you attach that sucker to the back of your case?
I knew I wasn't the only person to think of that, or did you see my post and make it? |

| Re: Computer window venting mod. idea How concerned with aesthetics are you? It would be a very easy (and relatively cheap) task to take a HVAC register duct and slightly modify it so it fits somewhat snugly to the back of the of your case around the PSU and video cards with some duct tape.
You can probably find a 4" one that will accommodate "that scrunchy hose" aka dryer duct. |
